Baby high chair safety checklist

By Wah Baby Shop, Wah Cantt · Updated 26 October 2026 · General advice. Always follow the product's own manual and labels.

A high chair (feeding chair) makes mealtimes easier and lets your baby eat with the family. Most high chair accidents happen when a child climbs, stands or pushes off, so a good harness and a stable base matter more than looks.

When is a baby ready for a high chair?

Most babies start solid food around 6 months. A baby is usually ready for a high chair when they can hold their head steady and sit upright with little support. If your baby still slumps to one side, wait a little or use extra support as the chair's manual allows.

What to check when buying

  • Harness: a 5-point harness or at least a waist strap with a crotch strap, so the baby cannot slide down under the tray.
  • Stable base: legs should be wide apart. Press on the back and sides; the chair should not wobble.
  • Tray: it should lock firmly and come off easily for washing.
  • Easy to clean: smooth seat padding or plastic you can wipe; few gaps where food collects.
  • Locks: if the chair folds or changes height, every lock should click firmly into place.
  • No sharp edges or small loose parts.

Safe use every day

  • Always buckle the harness. The tray is not a seat belt.
  • Never leave a baby alone in a high chair, even for a minute.
  • Keep the chair away from the dining table, walls and counters, so the baby cannot push off with their feet.
  • Do not let older children climb on or hang from the chair.
  • Make sure baby sits upright while eating, and cut food into small, soft pieces to reduce choking risk.
