How to choose a baby stroller or pram

By Wah Baby Shop, Wah Cantt · Updated 26 October 2026 · General advice. Always follow the product's own manual and labels.

A stroller (baby gari) is something you will use almost every day for two or three years, so it is worth checking a few things in person before you buy. This guide explains the difference between a pram and a stroller and gives you a simple checklist to take to any shop.

Pram or stroller: what is the difference?

A pram usually has a flat carrycot, so a newborn can lie fully flat. A stroller (also called a pushchair or buggy) has a seat, and is mainly for babies who can sit with support, usually from around 6 months.

Many strollers have a seat that reclines almost flat, which makes them usable from birth. If you are buying for a newborn, check how far the backrest goes back and ask the shop whether that model is suitable from birth.

Checklist before you buy

Try these in the shop, with the stroller unfolded:

  • Harness: a 5-point harness (two shoulder straps, two waist straps and one between the legs) keeps a baby safer than a waist belt alone.
  • Brakes: press the brake with your foot and push the stroller. It should not roll. Check that both rear wheels lock.
  • Recline: for a young baby, look for a backrest that goes back far enough for sleeping.
  • Canopy: a large hood helps in strong sun. In summer, also make sure air can still flow; never cover a stroller completely with a blanket or cloth.
  • Wheels: bigger wheels and front-wheel suspension cope better with broken pavements and market streets.
  • Fold and weight: fold it yourself. Can you do it quickly, and lift it into your car boot or up the stairs?
  • Handle height: both parents should be able to push without bending.
  • Basket and tray: a shopping basket underneath and a front tray or bumper bar are useful daily extras.
  • Cleaning: check whether the seat fabric can be wiped or removed for washing.

Safe daily use

  • Always use the harness, even for short trips.
  • Put the brake on whenever you stop, especially on slopes.
  • Do not hang heavy shopping bags on the handle; the stroller can tip backwards.
  • Keep fingers clear when folding and unfolding.
  • Follow the maximum child weight given in the stroller's manual.

Quick answers

At what age can a baby use a stroller?

A stroller with a seat is usually used once a baby can sit with support, around 6 months. If the backrest reclines almost flat, many strollers can be used earlier. Check the manual of the specific model.

What is better for a newborn, a pram or a stroller?

A pram or a stroller that reclines nearly flat is better for a newborn, because young babies need to lie flat. An upright stroller seat suits older babies.

What should I check first in a stroller?

Check the harness (5-point is best), the brakes, how far the seat reclines, and whether you can fold and lift it easily.

Roman Urdu mein khulasa

Stroller lene se pehle check karein: 5-point belt, brake, seat kitna peeche jati hai (newborn ke liye flat honi chahiye), dhoop ke liye bara canopy, mazboot pahiye aur fold karna aasan ho. Newborn ke liye pram ya flat recline wala stroller behtar hai. Wah Baby Shop, Uppal Chowk Wah Cantt mein strollers dekh kar khareedein; qeemat WhatsApp par.
